Core concepts
These are the main ideas behind the prices, signals, and labels shown across AusOdds.
Core concepts
These are the main ideas behind the prices, signals, and labels shown across AusOdds.
Odds comparison
AusOdds scans supported bookmaker prices across each market and highlights the strongest available odds for every outcome.
That gives users a quicker way to compare the market without checking every bookmaker one by one.
Quick example
If Adelaide Crows are 1.18 at Unibet, 1.16 at Neds, and 1.15 at TAB, AusOdds highlights Unibet 1.18 as the best bookmaker price for that outcome.
Higher odds mean a higher potential return for the same stake.
Fair odds and implied probabilities
Fair odds are a neutral reference point for comparing current market prices. Implied probability is calculated directly from the odds.
They are useful for comparison, but they are not a prediction or a guarantee that a price represents value.
Example
If a bookmaker offers odds of 2.00, the implied probability is 1 ÷ 2.00 = 50%. This means the market is suggesting the outcome has a 50% chance of occurring.
Bookmaker prices also include margin, so fair odds are used to compare prices against a cleaner baseline.
Implied probabilities (and fair odds) are a comparison tool.
Exchange commission
When exchange prices include commission, the headline odds can overstate the price a user actually receives. AusOdds therefore converts those prices into effective odds after commission where relevant.
This makes exchange prices easier to compare with bookmaker prices on a like-for-like basis.
Example
Betfair headline odds: 6.80
Commission: 6%
Effective odds shown by AusOdds: 6.45
Compare effective odds, not just headline exchange odds.
Worked example
See how a small pricing edge can flow through into a stake split and estimated return using the best odds.
Worked example
See how a small pricing edge can flow through into a stake split and estimated return using the best odds.
Step 1
Best available prices
AusOdds starts by identifying the strongest current bookmaker price for each outcome in the market.
Example
- Mauricio Ruffy: 1.23 at TAB
- Michael Chandler: 5.80 at Neds
Step 2
Implied probability
Implied probability is the chance suggested by a price before adjusting for margin or modelling.
At these prices, Ruffy implies about 81.3% and Chandler about 17.2%. Together they sit under 100%, which can point to a small opportunity.
Step 3
Estimated edge
If the implied probabilities are less than 100%, the combined prices are favourable. In that case AusOdds may show an estimated edge of around 1.5%.
That is a pricing signal based on current odds, not a guaranteed outcome.
Step 4
Stake split example
Using a $985 bankroll, a calculator-style split might look like this.
Example
- Stake about $813 on Ruffy
- Stake about $172 on Chandler
Step 5
Estimated result
At the displayed prices, that split points to an estimated result close to the following.
Example
- Total outlay: $985
- Estimated return: about $1,000
- Estimated profit: about $15
- Approximate edge: 1.5%
Step 6
Takeaway
Small edges can still matter, but they depend on timing, limits, and being able to place both sides at the displayed prices.
How to read an opportunity
When reviewing a market on AusOdds, these are the four things to check first.
How to read an opportunity
When reviewing a market on AusOdds, these are the four things to check first.
Best odds
Check which bookmaker is offering the strongest available price for each outcome.
Estimated edge
See whether the combined prices appear favourable with a positive edge. Most events will still show no positive edge overall.
Effective odds
Where exchange commission applies, compare the effective odds rather than the headline odds.
Stake plan
Use the calculator to see how a bankroll can be split across outcomes based on the current displayed prices.
Important considerations
Use these checks to avoid over-reading a single price or assuming an opportunity is easier to execute than it really is.
Important considerations
Use these checks to avoid over-reading a single price or assuming an opportunity is easier to execute than it really is.
No positive edge
A market can still show no positive edge even if one headline price looks strong. The other side may be too weak, exchange commission may reduce the effective price, or the fair-odds comparison may still point to a neutral market overall.
Overround
Bookmakers build margin into prices. If implied probabilities sum above 100%, the market includes bookmaker margin. If they are closer to or below 100%, the market may be more competitive and worth examining more closely.
Execution risk
Displayed opportunities assume successful execution at the shown prices. In practice, odds can move, markets can suspend, and stake limits may apply.
Best odds is not the same as best value
The highest displayed odds are useful, but value depends on how those odds compare with fair odds and the full market context.
Small edges
Most real opportunities are modest. A 0.5% to 2.0% edge can still be meaningful for disciplined users, but it is not the same as certainty.
Why exchanges matter
Exchanges can sometimes create temporary pricing gaps, but headline exchange odds need commission adjustment before they can be compared fairly with bookmaker prices.

Common questions about AusOdds
The product is informational only. It does not place bets, hold funds, or provide financial advice.
Is this legal in Australia?
AusOdds provides odds comparison, analytics, and informational tools for adults. It does not operate a wagering service, accept bets, or hold customer funds.
Laws and regulations can vary by state, territory, and personal circumstances, so users should make their own assessment and seek professional advice if they are unsure.
Do you place bets for me?
No. AusOdds does not place bets, open accounts, stake funds, or execute wagers on your behalf.
The platform is designed to help users inspect odds and compare pricing. Any decision to bet is made by the user with their chosen bookmaker.
Is an 'edge' guaranteed profit?
No. An indicated edge is not a guarantee of profit or a guaranteed outcome.
Displayed opportunities are based on available odds data at a point in time. Prices can move, markets can suspend, limits can apply, and settlements can differ between bookmakers.
Why can results vary if it’s calculated based on the odds?
Calculated outputs depend on market prices, timing, bookmaker rules, and how quickly odds change. A result shown on screen may no longer be available by the time a user acts on it.
Voids, stake limits, partial fills, and market suspensions can all affect real-world execution. Gambling also involves risk, so outcomes can differ from what users expect.
Which bookmakers and sports are supported?
AusOdds supports a selected set of bookmakers and sports based on the data currently available in the platform. Coverage can vary over time depending on source availability and market quality.
The current feed is focused on the sports and bookmakers visible in the product. Not every bookmaker, market, or event type is supported.
Can bookmakers limit me?
Yes. Bookmakers may apply account limits, stake restrictions, market limits, or account actions at their discretion.
AusOdds has no control over bookmaker account settings, acceptance decisions, or maximum bet amounts.
Do you support in-play betting?
Not as a primary workflow. AusOdds is oriented toward odds comparison and analytics for upcoming events.
For in-play information it should still be treated as informational only and not as a guarantee of availability or execution as odds change rapidly.
